Summary

Support product innovation and quality through accurate sensory testing and laboratory excellence. As a Sensory Technician, you will play a key role in executing sensory evaluations that help drive product development, quality assurance, and consumer insights. You will prepare and conduct sensory testing, maintain sensory lab operations and equipment, and ensure testing is performed according to established sensory protocols to deliver reliable results. Working closely with cross-functional teams, you will leverage technology and data management tools to support consumer testing initiatives and sensory research. This role is ideal for a highly organized, detail-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys working with data and technology, and is passionate about delivering accurate insights that influence product success.

 

This position has a target wage of $20.00 - $30.00 per hour, based on shift, experience and qualifications with annual bonus available (variable depending on performance). Overtime may be available.

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm

 

Principal Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct sensory tests as specified by sensory scientists and/or managers.
  • Ensure testing methodology is completed without errors and ready prior to testing day.
  • Enter data including product coding, testing methodology, materials, consumer information, cooking instructions, and test equipment into protocol forms and Compusense system.
  • Take pictures of products and testing areas and upload them into the system for reporting.
  • Check questionnaires for accuracy to ensure information updates correctly into custom reports.
  • Assist sensory scientists using software and platform programs.
  • Import large data from Microsoft Excel into Compusense.
  • Export data from Compusense into Microsoft Excel and other programs.
  • Prepare daily files using Microsoft Excel, Word, and Compusense system, including signing sheets, compensation distribution sheets, email reminders, and text message reminders.
  • Prepare for required tests by acquiring products and equipment necessary for methodology, including labeling.
  • Order products and shop for competitive products when needed.
  • Maintain work areas in clean, orderly condition and apply safety standards.
  • Conduct safety checks of building and labs 1–2 times per year.
  • Prepare and clean lab and testing areas.
  • Assist other teams such as culinary and product development when needed.
  • Track lab inventory and order supplies.
  • Maintain weekly product inventory in refrigerators and freezers.
  • Order supplies for serving products, including shipping materials for mail and product pickup testing.
  • Cook and prepare products for testing using commercial, residential, and food service equipment.
  • Provide customer service to Delmarva Sensory customers.
  • Answer phones, respond to emails, and troubleshooting with customers using the sensory computer system.
  • Maintain high customer satisfaction ratings by interacting professionally and respectfully.
  • Monitor customer service satisfaction ratings on Delmarva Sensory social media and survey programs.
  • Upload reports to the shared drive and/or Perdue iQ research library.
  • Communicate with scientists and research and development team members on testing and product information.
  • Organize and inventory the sensory lab.
  • Maintain sensory protocols and ensure they are up to date.
  • Adhere to good laboratory practices (GLP) and ServSafe standards.
  • Update and maintain Delmarva Sensory consumer databases.
  • Manage email addresses, consumer profiles, and children accounts.
  • Mail account update flyers.
  • Run activity reports in Compusense and export Excel data.
  • Develop monthly and quarterly PowerPoint reports.
  • Prepare samples using protocols, including labeling and purchasing reference products and serving receptacles.
  • Document datasheets, preparation protocols, pull dates of commercial products, lab logs, product databases, and shopping lists.
  • Restock supplies and store products properly.
  • Follow up with sensory scientists and product developers to ensure samples and prep/cooking instructions are received prior to testing day.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by manager.

 

Minimum Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma/GED equivalent.
  • At least 6 months of work experience.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to manage time well in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Strong computer skills and intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of common kitchen appliances and cooking.
  • Willingness to taste test protein products such as chicken, turkey, beef, and pork.

 

Preferred Education and Experience

  • At least 1 year of experience in the food industry, medical industry, or science lab.
  • Experience working in a food manufacturing lab or manufacturing facility.
  • Experience in sensory testing.

 

Physical Requirements and Environmental Factors

  • Stand, bend, and move frequently.
  • Move light equipment or supplies (10–20 lbs.) from one place to another.
  • Access files, supplies, and equipment as needed.
  • Perform work activities in a kitchen, food truck, and lab.
