Summary

Drive safety excellence and regulatory performance across our commercial fleet operations. As a Commercial Fleet Safety & Transportation Compliance Officer, you will lead the oversight and enforcement of all federal and state transportation safety regulations, ensuring full compliance with DOT and FMCSA requirements while strengthening fleet safety performance and minimizing risk. You will proactively monitor safety metrics, investigate incidents, and partner closely with Operations and Safety teams to drive continuous improvement and maintain strong carrier safety ratings. The salary range for this position is $68,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year, based on experience and qualifications with annual bonus available (variable depending on performance).

Principal Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintain and audit Driver Qualification (DQ) files to ensure accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee the Drug and Alcohol Testing Program, including full administration of the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.
  • Manage annual vehicle inspections and maintenance files, ensuring documentation meets DOT standards and audit readiness.
  • Proactively review driving behaviors, including unsafe driving events, hours of service compliance, and ELD-generated data.
  • Collaborate with Operations and Safety leadership to develop and implement corrective action plans to improve safety performance.
  • Analyze CSA BASIC scores and identify emerging compliance or safety risks.
  • Provide reporting, insights, and compliance guidance to leadership and operational partners.
  • Lead the DATAQs challenge process, including submission, tracking, and follow-up.
  • Support the Safety and operations team in post-accident investigations, including documentation review, trend analysis, and root cause assessments.
  • Prepare compliance reports, findings, and recommendations for leadership review.
  • Partner with Operations, Safety, and Leadership teams to align compliance expectations with operational execution.
  • Track safety evaluations up to and including on-site yard, customer and driver ride alongs.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in transportation safety, DOT compliance, or fleet management. 
  • Understanding of FMCSA and DOT regulations, including CSA, HOS, and DQ files.
  • Proficiency with ELD platforms, specifically Samsara, including reporting and compliance monitoring.
  • Strong analytical, investigation and documentation skills.
  • Experience of FMSCA/DOT regulations and enforcement standards.
  • Ability to analyze safety data and translate findings into actionable improvements.
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Excel, Word, BI, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Highly detail-oriented and able to follow up in a timely manner and prioritize in a fast-paced environment with a sense of urgency.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability.
  • Proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally with Operations and Safety partners.

 

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in transportation or related field.

 

Physical Requirements and Environmental Factors

  • Prolonged sitting with frequent computer use, including typing, data analysis, and report review.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal teams, drivers, and external agencies.
  • Occasional standing, walking, and movement throughout office, yard, and operational environments.
  • Ability to conduct field work, including yard audits, ride-alongs, and site visits, with exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • May require bending, reaching, and light lifting up to 25 pounds; exposure to moving vehicles, equipment, noise, dust, and diesel fumes.
  • Fast-paced work environment with shifting priorities, regulatory deadlines, and travel to terminals, customer locations, and incident sites as needed.
