Join our team as a Water Plant Operator (Class 3 or 4)! As a Water Plant Operator, you’ll be responsible for the day-to-day operation, monitoring, testing, and maintenance of the water and/or wastewater treatment equipment.

Principal and Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operating and adjusting plant equipment such as pumps, valves, clarifiers, filters, and chemical feeders via local controls or a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system
  • Collecting and analyzing water/wastewater samples in the on-site laboratory. Testing parameters may include pH, chlorine, turbidity, alkalinity, biological oxygen demand (BOD), and total suspended solids (TSS)
  • Performing routine preventative maintenance and minor corrective repairs on plant equipment, including cleaning, lubrication, and calibration of instruments
  • Maintaining the cleanliness and order of the plant facility and grounds
  • Responding to emergency situations, such as power outages or equipment failures, that could impact water quality or discharge compliance
  • Ensuring the plant operates in strict compliance with all environmental regulations (e.g., EPA, state/local laws)

Minimum Education

  • Possess a valid Class III or Class IV Water Treatment or Wastewater Treatment Operator License (or a combination) issued by state of Kentucky 

Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements

When in a Water Plant environment:

    • Work in conditions that can be dirty, noisy, and potentially hazardous, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    • Exposure to raw industrial and domestic sewage
    • Exposure to strong, unpleasant odors is frequent, especially in preliminary treatment and sludge handling areas
    • Operators must occasionally enter confined spaces (e.g., tanks, pits, manholes) for inspection and repair
    • Requires work in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, or snow
    • Constant exposure to loud noise from pumps, blowers, and heavy machinery is common
    • Must have the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds or more (e.g., chemical bags, equipment, tools)
    • Frequent need to climb stairs and ladders (up to 20 feet or more) to access equipment, tanks, and elevated platforms
    • Operators spend a significant portion of the shift standing and walking over rough, uneven, or slippery surfaces, often across a large facility area
    • Must be able to use hand and power tools for maintenance and repair tasks, and possess the fine motor skills required for accurate laboratory testing
